If neither women saw the baby that they conceived, how would they know that the other child was not the one they conceived? So as far as they know, the baby is theirs.

They were taken aback when the child was not the same color as them.

It would be foolish to say that color does not matter. As long as we have eyes, appearance (including color), will matter. If everyone was blind, there would still be something used to discriminate. Maybe the sound of voice, shape of head or softness of hands would be used.
