Re: African Presence in Asia
In Response To: Re: African Presence in Asia ()

Well there are certainly many cultural similarities between some of the African tribes in India and those on the continent, in many ways more than there are between Africans on the continent and those in the Caribbean or in the United States or anywhere else in the Diaspora. As a matter of fact, as I mentioned before, there are tribes who are not only phenotypically but culturally very similar to those on the continent due to the fact that they were isolated and not permitted to mix with other groups because of their skin colour. There are tribes and groups whose dialect is actually similar to African languages than it is to any Indian dialect due to their isolation.

Many Africans and African descended people in India were taken or migrated there from as recently as the 17th and 18th centuries, the same as those in the Caribbean and in the Americas. We both know that many people in the Diaspora do not call themselves African due to miseducation and brainwashing- does their ignorance make them any less African? In any case the Dalits certainly do recognize their African ancestry and have formed many links with pan-African organizations, fighting for the freedoms and liberties of Africans wherever they reside.

The centuries long history of Africans on the Indian continent is surely not a matter of them as you say "rejecting their African ancestral nationality. These are people that migrated to other places over 100,000 years ago, as all Africans did to people the world; in that context there is nothing about nationality there. These people, like their ancestors have lived in India for centuries and are quite in order, in my view, to see themselves as both Indian and African.

What emerges here for me is further validation of the common ancestry of all people and the fundamental truth that the first people were African people, the same African people that suffer to varying degrees wherever they are in the world. Learning about and forming bonds with Africans in bondage the world over can do us nothing but good.
