The reason they all adopted that title was because they all knew that their branch of the House of David was the heir to the promise of Christ.

That is why you had Kassa naming himself Tewodros, because he had been told that the Messiah would be called by that name. Whether he was THAT Messiah is something I would leave it to people to decide. Every Messiah has to be recognised by the people, and we recognise only Emperor Haile Selassie. That is what makes us Rastafarians. We are not concerned about all the other Messiahs any more than a Christian would be concerned about Bar-Kochba for example.

When Sahla Selassie began to restore the Ethiopian empire, he too hoped to be named the Messiah, and even wanted to call himself Mennelik- if you know the dyansty well, you would know that there had not been one named after the Solomonic founder of that dynasty. But the sages and mystics told him that this name should be given to his grandson. This is what happened. Mennelik II established Addis Ababa as the capital of Ethiopia because he had been told that the Messiah would be crowned there.

Today, Emperor Haile Selassie is the only Emperor of that lineage ,from its Kushitic foundations, through to the Solomonic branch, to this day when it is in a state of interregnum who was crowned in Addis Ababa.

Many Rastafarians know these things. It is not out of ignorance that we regard the Emperor Haile Selassie I as the Messiah, but the result of extensive search and study of not just the Bible, but the traditions around it, and history.
