Yes, there is a color competition some Black people feel that light skin is better because it’s closer to white. I know black activists who only date light skin women. One in particular eventually married a white woman. Afterwards he slacked off on his activism. Proclaiming to be pro-black with a white woman or man as a mate weakens your stance in my opinion. And even though people may keep silent it still raises doubt about your sincerity.
In America, the competition among dark and light skin women is sad. Black men generally favor the light skin women. Some light skin women carry airs because they know the fixation Black men have on women close to white. It is even obvious in cyberspace. All one has to do is proclaim to be of mixed race, or parade a picture of a light skin woman and the men interact with her differently –more flirty/complimentary etc. Many African Americans are brainwashed when it comes to beauty but prefer to label it “preference.”
All that said I have nothing against the lighter skin brothers and sisters. I just wish we looked at each other the same. It seems, some people feel that intermarrying and reproducing biracial children will bring the races together. That’s a simplistic view, it’s more complicated than that. There will be no equalitarian society as long as there is a dominant affluent group because it’s in their best interest to keep society unequal. And as long is society is unequal there will be resentment and division among the people (IMHO).
