Re: Light Skin Ruling Ethiopian Elite

Well everytime someone raises the issue of racism, or colorism, there is bound to be talk that it is divisive. This just serves to ignore the history and reality that is faced day in day out by some people.

Indeed, it is clear the Ethipian history is complex, and that is why it deserves more than the dismisiveness which it has been subjected to.
There is a clear trend in Ethiopian history that that shows that the more dark/kinky haired ethnic peoples have been subjected to abuse.

The Oromos constitute the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia, and their experiences according to them has been one of oppression where they have been subjected to the amharization of their culture. However the issue is bigger than the Oromo. There are other indigenous people such as the Nuer, Anuak and Shilluk, who also have their own stories to articulate. Ethiopia has many different indigenous ethnic peoples and it is unwise for their stories to be discounted for a glamarous one sided view that everything Haile Selassie did was all good. This can be linked to the many rasta sites that are owned by whites, that reinforce the general European domination of information.

For sure when i say that Haile Selassie was not sensitive to the darker skinned masses, this does not mean that he did not try to do good. Neither is it not my mission to feed the idea that Selassie was all good to all people as different people do have their stories and I hope they feel welcomed to share them in the hope of fostering greater understanding.

Rasi: "In every place on Earth, their is an 'official' language. Amharic happens to be the official language of Ethiopia. Of course there have been and continue to be conflict in Ethiopia, however your simplistic view of the dynamics of Ethiopian istory, and the reduction of the issue by your assertations are lacking any substance"
~~~~~~~
Well of course on earth there is an official language, but how that came to be so, could certainly be examined. History has shown that those with power impose their standards and culture on the dominated groups, even against their will. That is how we are speaking English now. Is not because Britian is a superior and moral nation, just that they had superior military firepower.
I am pleased by the responses, especially the willingness displayed by empress afrique to consider the point that i made. For those that are interested in perspectives other than the ones in the mainstream, they can easily research the other ethnic groups in Ethipia such as the Sullik, Anuak,Oromo and Nuer.
