Greetings Gman,
You said about obeah men/women "I believe some of them do have real powers but often they are used for evil purposes... but leh we analyze why that is. Is it the ancient African tradition that is wrong, or the way that it has been diluted and distorted by slavery?"
Yes I, I think the question you posted is important. I have had lengthy reasonings about voodoo with ex-boyfriend of mine who's from Haiti. He says voodoo was originally a way of healing people/family members and only after it was brought to Haiti it started to change form. The Afrikan slaves started to use the powers against the slavemasters. Also the people got gready and started to use it to get material goods and power. So voodoo became "evil". Apparently the only "real" voodoo priests/priestesses use it only amongst their own families to heal and protect, NEVER taking any money or material goods in return. So according to this, the original voodoo from Afrika was natural healing which became very different during the slavery.
Jah guidance,
