Re: Wisdom of Berhane Selassie (Bob Marley)

from the Bob Marley biography by Stephen Davis:

As Bob lost more weight and began to look deathly ill, his family pressured him to be baptized in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Actually, Bob`s mother (who herself had been baptized in St. Ann with Bob in utero) had been trying to get Bob baptized in the E.O.C. for years but he had always said to her in putting it off, "I baptized by fire." There had also been the problem of the Twelve Tribes, which looked upon the E.O.C. as a rival organization. But now, fearing for his life, Bob agreed to baptism as a favor to his mother, thinking he had only another week or two to live. So on November 4, Bob was baptized at the Wellington Hotel, as a tearful Rita Marley and their children watched, by Abouna Yesuhaq, Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the Western Hemisphere. Bob was christened Berhane Selassie, "Light of the Holy Trinity."
