Description: An Ethiopian protective scroll, comprising an incantation in Geez. The text contains a prayer composed by a priest in his capacity as a healer, designed to drive away spirits which are causing a woman named Welte Mariam to suffer rheumatism. The prayer also calls upon God to empower the woman in her daily life.
Three talismans: one at the head; one central; and one at the foot.
Materials: natural vegetable dyes on vellum.
Origin: Circa mid to late 19th century A.D. Northern Ethiopia.
